當孩子從《Hottest Coldest Highest Deepest》這本書知道世
界最高峰：Mount Everest，今天介紹 Steve Jenkins 另一本
備受推崇的知識性繪本
《The Top of the World: Climbing Mount Everest》，帶孩
子一窺世界屋脊的神秘神奇。
好書藏封底！？這次的好書推薦不在封底，而是在封底內頁
，必須翻開封底。哇！好酒沉甕底喔!這本書得到五項權威

要認識第一高峰，先來知道它的地理位置。
哇！原來地理課本讀到的“世界屋脊”英文是
“The Roof of the World”，而書名標題的
“The Top of the World”是指“世界之頂”，不同稱呼卻有
異曲同工之妙，還有 The Himalayas、Nepal、
the Sherpa people、Tibet 等等重要的專有名詞。摘錄書中一
段雋美的描寫：“People in Nepal and Tibet think of Mount
Everest as a holy place, full of power and mystery.”
下半頁對於地球板塊推移 (Continenttal Drift) 有清楚的解釋
，讓讀者對第一高峰的形成與地理位置有明確的認識。

那 “第一高峰”是怎麼測量出來的呢？而 Mount Everest 是
如何被命名的呢？從 Measuring the Mountain 與 Namesake
這兩項說明，孩子可以得到有趣的答案。

攀爬“第一高峰”要從何處開始呢？當然是從 Nepal 的首都
Kathmandu 啟程，出發前別忘了去一趟 The Monkey
Temple 祭祀祈福，祈求平安。

嚴峻的旅程需要能幹的嚮導與有力的助手。想要爬上“第一
高峰”非得仰賴當地的 the Sherpas 與 Yaks 來鼎力相助囉！
摘錄兩段流暢的書寫：
“…(Sherpas) They are famous for their strength, climbing skill,
and honesty. Sherpas are born and raised in the mountains, so
they are accustomed to the altitude and can work well high on
the mountain.“
“…Yaks can withstand the harsh cold of the mountains and are
often used to help carry expedition supplies to base camp.”
語言的學習首重文字的清麗典雅，心靈的耕耘不外知識的充
實敏捷。不論是內容敘述、用字遣詞要俐落細膩，或是情節
鋪陳、起承轉合要明快紮實，這些經典文學才能呈現的雋永
風格都是坊間一般的英文教材無法讀到，卻在一本本精緻
的兒童文學裡俯拾即是。從這些摘錄裡，到處都是值得孩子
學習的範本，有 think of … as …、 full of…、famous for…、
are born、are accustomed to、work well、withstand the harsh
cold、are used to help、help carry、carry expedition supplies to
base camp 等等。
要邁開步伐前，別忘了先打包行李。

“Packing for the Trip
It takes a lot of special gear to climb Mount Everest. Here is
some of the equipment you’ll need.”
原來動詞 take 可以這樣用，而 gear、equipment 這些整體性
名詞可以包含Climbing Suit、Glacier Glasses、Trekking Poles、
Mountaineering Boots、Jumar、Sleeping Bag、Oxygen
Mask and Tank、Ice Ax 等等特殊的登山專用配備。防滑的
帶釘鞋鉤叫 Crampons、登山靴是 Mountaineering Boots，
玲琅滿目的登山工具真叫人大開眼界。

萬事雖具備，但是面對陌生、崇偉的大自然可別忘了收集完
整的資訊好作為路上隨機應變、突破重圍的有用備案。掌握
確切的動植物生態習性、明白環境的溫濕度狀況都有助於攻
頂的順利進行。除了認識大自然之外，入境要隨俗，不妨跟
著虔誠的 the Sherpas 頂禮膜拜，祈求天神庇祐“Blessings
of the Gods”。
雖然有神明庇祐，高山的險峻卻是危機處處，有
The Icefall、Rivers of Ice、Unstable Layers
以及最駭人的 Avalanche。逐漸稀薄的空氣 (extremely thin
air) 不斷挑戰人體的極限，而預防高山症 (altitude sickness)
是有訣竅的。只是氧氣隨著高度遞減，相對的保暖也變得更
加困難，要小心，別凍傷。
“Frostbite
Sometimes climbers’ hands, feet, or faces get so cold that they
freeze. This condition, called frostbite, often results in the loss of
the parts of the body that have frozen. Many high-altitude
climbers have lost fingers or toes in this way.”
從這段關於凍傷的描寫，是否又學到不少精闢的用詞呢？如
果在課堂教學，我會藉由 frostbite= frost+bite來引導出相關字
彙，例如：fleabite、snakebite、mosquito bite、backbite。
猜猜看 backbite 是什麼意思呢？很傳神的抽象單字，
backbite 是指背後中傷、背後誹謗。再進一步延伸。您家裡
有用到 mosquito net 或是 mosquito curtain 嗎？
或許 backache、backbone、backdoor、backpack 這些
單字比較容易推斷意思，但是一定要知道 backstroke，
backstroke 指的是游泳四式裡的仰式，您猜對了嗎？

攻頂成功的那一天 (Summit Day)，必得經過最嚴峻的考驗：
The Death Zone。作者對攀爬“第一高峰”作了有始有終的
完整報導。不但詳列世界各大洲的最高峰作比較，還記載攻
頂的特殊紀錄保持人，例如: 年齡最老及最輕的、第一位攻
頂女士、不須山友協助的攻頂獨行俠、單日最多人數攻頂的
日期。最後，這份書目供讀者閱讀參考。
